Landlord, Rental Owner and Property Manager Participation Needed for Hawai‘i Rental Market Survey
Insights needed by Monday, Nov. 30, 2020 to help assess the impact of COVID-19 on tenants and landlords

HONOLULU – The Honolulu Board of REALTORS® and the University of Hawai‘i Economic Research Organization (UHERO) are encouraging landlords, rental owners and property managers to participate in a survey to assess the impact of COVID-19 on Hawai‘i’s rental market.
“We know many people continue to face financial hardship as a result of the pandemic, and we want to create informed solutions to address Hawai‘i’s housing crisis,” said Suzanne Young, CEO, Honolulu Board of REALTORS®. “Landlords, rental owners and property managers who take the survey will help drive data-driven policies around housing during and after the crisis.”
The monthly surveys, which began in September, aim to gather data on the number of rental households struggling to pay rent and the number of rental properties at risk of being removed from the market.
“Previous results for this monthly survey showed that both tenants and landlords are struggling, which may ultimately result in longer-term impacts on the housing market,” said Philip Garboden, the HCRC Professor in Affordable Housing Economics, Policy, and Planning at UHERO and DURP. “We need input from tenants, landlords and rental owners to get information as quickly as we can to inform future decision making.”
The short survey is available at https://uhero.hawaii.edu/rental-survey/.
